My First Cold Sore

I've never had a cold sore in my life.

Until last week.

I know, right?

This left me asking myself a million questions, after I did the research and photo-search (eww...please do yourself a favor and never, ever do a photo-search of cold sores) to verify my ailment.

Question:  Who have I been kissing?
Answer: I've only been kissing one particularly amazing fellow - and he doesn't get cold sores.

Question:  Could it be anyone I've ever kissed?
Answer:  Apparently not.  They manifest within three weeks of being exposed to the virus.  After the initial outbreak, this bugger of a virus can lay dormant in your system until all of the conditions are right to manifest.

Question:  SO...where did I get this?!?
Answer: Has someone been stealing kisses from me while I sleep?  I'm absolutely baffled.

Hmm...interesting...have you been sharing your chap stick or lip stick with someone? Sharing food/utensils? That is pretty strange to just wake up with them one day!

I'll admit it... it was Jon.

I don't get cold sores and Josh doesn't either, but oh 10ish years ago I had a bad fever and as a result got a fever blister. Looks and acts just like a cold sore. Ever since then when I've been in the sun too much or have a fever I get one. I still buy the same medicine for cold sores though. Look up fever blisters. Have you been sick at all?

Okay so they are from the same virus but this article list a few additional causes. Plus home remedies! :)

Amy - according to that site, fever blisters and cold sores are the same thing.
Everyone else- I went over the three weeks prior to the blister in my Google Calendar and I cannot even see anyone I would have eaten after or shared chapstick with except for aforementioned boy. I'm absolutely baffled! I do think my body is exhausted because I go-go-go-go, but this is how I typically run. No sickness. It's just bizarre!

Most people are exposed to the Herpes Simplex Virus at some point in their life. It's ridiculously common. Once you are exposed you have it for life, however, not everyone breaks out in colds sores. So your fellow can carry and never get them, but pass the HSV on to you, and if you've never been exposed before- you now can break out. Is it making sense?

For example, my older sister has had cold sores since she was 14, but I have never had one in my life. Surely we have shared enough make-up, drinks etc... for me to have caught the virus. So I can pass it on to others that may break out even if I never do. It kind of sucks to be one of the ones that breaks out.

I wouldn't worry about finding the source, it's pretty easy to catch and it could be a friend who used your cup, sharing makeup at a show (and not just lipstick) or kissing a guy or about a million other ways. AND you can break out ages after you first catch it, it's that annoying. Good luck and stay out of the sun til it clears up!

Oh no Larissa! My family gets them and David does too, I've been fortunate to avoid them all during those times. But in doing that, really anything you touch, someone with a Cold Sore could have touched and then if you touch your mouth etc, you're dead. Anyway, I'm sorry. David has these blue pills prescribed, Valacyclovire (i'm sure not spelling right), and so if you feel the tingling coming (another cold sore) then you take the pill immediately and it shortens its life dramatically and sometimes it doesn't blister as bad either. If you want some suggestions, just let me know! Good luck...

Melaleuca (tea tree) essential oil, right when it starts! Even better than abreva, and natural! Mine are Tom's fault...I always remind him of that on the rare occasions that they manifest. :)

how long ago was salsa night?! I don't have one, nor have I ever, but if I get one I'm blaming you!

Well, you can get cold sores through transmissions other than kissing. You might have used an infected untensil that was not properly washed, maybe in a restaurant. Or maybe Josh did have the virus, but just didn't show symptoms. Some people are just that way.

Cold sores can come from a lot of different places, and there is no need to be ashamed. I've had cold sores for about 4 years now and I've come to accept them. Though they are not some wonderful thing in my life, there are ways to control flare ups. Theres some oral medicine, or some applicators like Intercept CS if you cant take the drugs. Stay strong, and fight on.
