The Appearance of Evil

Want to read a controversial guest-post I did for The Cultural Hall Podcast?

I'm warning you, this is a totally vanilla, boring topic for most  of the world, which explains why I have been insulted for the very first time with the word "insipid."

However, for the LDS audience, sleeping in the same hotel room as your boyfriend is quite the hullabaloo.  Who knew?   Apparently you can't sleep in the same room without having sex.  Except that I can.

Read the post.

Foremost, I love the dress you chose to wear!

Second, I'd say those who are naysayers either
1) Can't mind their own business
2) Perhaps are among those who got married fast and young because they couldn't wait
and
3) Equate "single" with "juvenile"
Though mostly the first

Third, a point you didn't raise is even if you were to spend the extra several hundred dollars for a room of your own -- what was to guarentee you even stayed in that room?

Mmmmk. Actually had to stop and think my own opinion through.

I completely agree with you that you did nothing in violation of the Law of Chastity. I'm also feel that anyone haranguing you ought to mind their own business.

Yet when I pose the question to myself of, "Would I share a room in those circumstances?" My /own/ answer is "no." And that is simply because it is outside my personal bounds of propriety. It's not sinful, yet it is simply my paradigm that two, unwed individuals who share a romantic interest ought not share the intimacy of a shared sleeping and waking space.

So all that says. Eh, I don't agree with you, but it's your own business.

Janell - I totally agree with you! On both comments. What I found myself faced with was this decision, "Same hotel room or no trip." In the end, I didn't want to miss out on this great experience. Do I do it all the time? No. I prefer not to. If there are other options that wouldn't break the bank, I'd gladly take them. The first time I went on vacation with Rob I slept in a bed with his mother. Yep. The second time? I slept on a mattress on the floor next to his brother and sister in law and two nieces. So, ya know...I'll avoid the situation if I can:-) Thank you for standing up for what YOU believe! I love having you as a reader/commenter/friend:-)

Great post, and you're right on. Even at BYU, if people wanted to sin, they could find a place to do it. We all know you well enough to trust you. I'm glad you guys had such a great time at Disneyland!

After reading the post and some of the comments all I have to say is this: people need to mind their own damn business. Even if you did decide to go down in a 'blaze of glory' that's YOUR BUSINESS--no one else's. You are 32 years old and are free to use your agency how ever YOU please. I understand sharing this story put you out there for scrutiny, but the ones scrutinizing you CLEARLY have no idea who you are or what you stand for. Just don't become too comfortable, because it's REALLY easy to let the water in the pot heat up before you realize it.

I'm sorry about the insipid comment. It took all I had to not go all momma bear and attack.
